It's one of the most common mix-ups we see: someone tells us they're 'sorted' because they have funeral cover — when what their family will really need is life cover. They are not the same thing, and confusing the two can leave the people you love badly exposed. Here's the difference, without the jargon.
Funeral cover: fast cash for the send-off
Funeral cover is a small, quick payout designed for one job: covering the cost of a funeral. In South Africa that matters enormously — funerals are culturally important and expensive, and families need cash within days. Funeral cover delivers, usually paying out within 24 to 48 hours, with no medical exams to get started, and it can cover your whole extended family on one policy. But the payout is modest by design — enough for the funeral, not for the years that follow.
Life cover: protecting the years after
Life cover is the big one. It pays a large lump sum to your family if you die — enough to settle the bond, clear debts, replace your income for years, and keep the children in school. Where funeral cover handles the week after you're gone, life cover handles the decade after. The payout is far larger, which is why it's based on your needs and may involve a few health questions or a medical.
The simple way to tell them apart
- Funeral cover = a few days' problem. Pays fast, covers the funeral, small amount, whole family.
- Life cover = a few years' problem. Pays big, replaces income and clears debt, protects your dependants long-term.
- If you only have funeral cover, ask: once the funeral is paid for, how does my family keep paying the bond?
So which do you need?
For most families with dependants, the honest answer is both. Funeral cover handles the immediate, emotional, cash-now moment. Life cover handles the long, practical aftermath — the mortgage, the income, the future. Add disability and critical-illness cover and you have a proper safety net. The right mix depends on your debts, your income and who relies on you — exactly the conversation a broker should walk you through. (Start with the basics of life cover and funeral cover.)
