Personal insurance

Car Insurance, without the babble.

Comprehensive cover for your vehicle — accidents, theft, hijacking and third-party damage.

Your car is one of the biggest assets you own — and on South African roads it's exposed to everything from potholes and pile-ups to theft and hijacking. Car insurance protects you from the financial hit of accidents, damage and crime, so one bad day on the road doesn't turn into a financial disaster.

As independent brokers, Ample compares comprehensive, third-party and specialised car cover across South Africa's leading insurers — MiWay, Santam, Old Mutual Insure, Hollard and more — to find the right balance of cover and premium for how, and where, you actually drive.

What Car Insurance covers

Comprehensive cover

Damage to your own car plus theft, hijacking, fire and third-party claims — the widest protection available.

Theft & hijacking

Replacement or a cash settlement if your vehicle is stolen or hijacked, a very real risk on SA roads.

Accident damage

Repairs after a collision, whether the accident was your fault or someone else's.

Third-party liability

Damage your vehicle causes to other people's cars or property, which can run into the millions.

Weather & fire

Hail, flooding, storms and fire damage — increasingly common with SA's extreme weather.

Optional extras

Car hire while you're off the road, roadside assistance, and cover for sound systems and accessories.

Who car insurance is for

  • Anyone who owns or finances a vehicle
  • Daily commuters and high-mileage drivers
  • Families running more than one car
  • Drivers who want lower excess or scratch-and-dent cover

Car Insurance FAQs

Is car insurance compulsory in South Africa?

It isn't legally required, but driving uninsured is a serious risk — a single accident could cost you hundreds of thousands of rands. Most vehicle-finance agreements also require comprehensive cover until the car is paid off.

What's the difference between comprehensive and third-party cover?

Comprehensive covers your own car plus damage you cause to others. Third-party only covers damage to other people's property — not your own vehicle. Comprehensive is the most popular choice for exactly this reason.

Will my premium go up even if I don't claim?

Premiums can still rise with inflation, your car's risk profile and where you live, even when you're claim-free. Staying claim-free usually earns better terms, and as your broker we shop the market each renewal to keep yours fair.

Does car insurance cover hijacking?

Yes — comprehensive and theft cover include hijacking. Insurers often require an approved tracking device, which can also lower your premium.
